Undergraduates

Undergraduate Summer Studentships

Each summer the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences (MRC LMS) provides intensive laboratory research experience and science communication experience to undergraduate students in the biological and clinical sciences. By offering first class research opportunities we want to prepare degree students to become future research leaders. We particularly encourage applications from students who are interested in undertaking a PhD at the LMS.

Only undergraduate UK/EU students in the middle years of their undergraduate degree are eligible to apply. Students who have completed their final year or are yet to commence their first year will not be accepted.

Unfortunately, due to time restrictions, we are unable to accept students who require a visa application to join the programme for the summer period.

The programme will run for eight weeks across the months of July & August. All students must participate for the full eight weeks.

The studentship also includes a stipend to help cover travel and subsistence. Accommodation is not provided as part of the programme, but assistance in organising this is available to those who need it.

Applications for the 2019 programme are now open!

We have 6 research based and 1 science communication summer studentships available this year.

Research Studentships

The Research Studentships are available in the below research groups within the institute:

  1. Molecular Systems
  2. Computational Regulatory Genomics
  3. Functional Gene Control
  4. Behavioural Genomics
  5. Reprogramming & Chromatin
  6. Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance & Evolution

Each studentship will be focussing on an individual project within one of the above research groups for the duration of the programme.

Applicants must submit one application form to be considered by all recruiting supervisors. From the information provided on your application, we will look to find a suitable match between student and supervisor. If your application is shortlisted by any of the supervisors, you will have a phone interview to discuss the available projects and following all interviews, offers will be made to one student per research group/project.

To apply for a research summer studentship please download the application form from HERE and email to students@lms.mrc.ac.uk by the deadline date of Wednesday 27 March 23:59 GMT, with the subject title: ‘Undergraduate Summer Programme Application’.

Referees will only be contacted if your application is shortlisted.

Science Communication Studentship

Do you have an interest in science communications and/or public engagement and outreach? Do you want to gain skills and experience engaging different audiences with research? The science communication studentship at LMS will provide you with the opportunity to work on internal and external communications for the institute, for example website news pieces, and the chance to support events and projects of varying scale and nature that engage and involve the public with our research.

Each summer the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences (MRC LMS) provides a science communication experience to undergraduate students based within the Grants, Engagement and Communications (GECo) team at the LMS. We particularly encourage applications from students who are interested in a future career in science communication.

To apply for this studentship please download the application from HERE and email to geco@lms.mrc.ac.uk by the deadline date of Sunday 24 March 23:59 GMT, with the subject title: ‘Undergraduate Summer Programme – Science Communication Application’.

Referees will only be contacted if your application is shortlisted.
