Salary: £46,675 to £80,081 per annum
The Chain Florey Early Consolidator Fellowship provides an outstanding opportunity for resident doctors to undertake a 24-month programme combining 50% protected research time and 50% clinical training, supported within the world-leading biomedical research environment of the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS).
This fellowship is designed for doctors in specialty training who have completed a PhD (or expect to have submitted their PhD thesis within 3 months of the Fellowship start date) and are seeking to consolidate their postdoctoral research experience. It offers protected time to develop independence as a researcher, bridging the transition from PhD completion to establishing an externally funded academic career.
You will conduct laboratory research at the LMS to gather data, consolidate research skills and develop a competitive early career fellowship application for external funders. You will benefit from the Chain Florey program which provides mentorship, training and careers support. A 1–2-page project outline should be submitted with the application accompanied by a full CV and publication list. The proposed project should be in the remit of at least one LMS research group and you are advised to informally contact potential supervisors before applying. Short-listed candidates will be invited to a panel interview where they will share a 10-minute presentation of their research project outline, scientific background and future funding plans.
Athena SWAN
In 2017, the Institute received an Athena SWAN Silver Award to recognize its commitment to advancing women’s careers in science and research.
At the LMS there are three working groups which deliver on the action plan developed for the silver application.

Technician’s Commitment
The LMS is a signatory to the Technician Commitment, a sector-wide initiative led by the Science Council and the Gatsby Foundation which aims to address the particular career challenges faced by technical and scientific support staff.
We provide opportunities to work alongside some of the top medical researchers on the planet, from our state-of-the-art research facilities.
