Postdoctoral training
Our LMS postdoctoral researchers are our biggest staff group and they’re an engaged and active team. We employ postdoctoral staff ranging from those who have recently graduated with PhDs to senior postdoctoral researchers on the cusp of independence.
Introduction to postdoctoral researcher life at the LMS
We support postdoctoral researchers at every stage of their careers; not only do they benefit from a vibrant and supportive workplace, with state-of the-art scientific facilities, there are plenty of extra-mural training opportunities, and ten days of CPD every year are enshrined in their contracts. The LMS postdoctoral researcher committee also organises a vibrant calendar of social events including monthly social nights, board games nights, and an annual retreat.
What opportunities are available
Our postdoctoral staff comprise fellows funded directly by the MRC through our core-funding grant, and those supported by other funding sources. Additionally, we have team members engaged via personal fellowships from EMBO, Henry Wellcome and FUNDAME, and clinical postdoctoral fellows funded through our Chain Florey scheme.
Postdoctoral positions are advertised on an ad-hoc basis across the year as vacancies emerge. Vacancies emerge as part of research groups and our facilities and can be hands-on research or lab management opportunities. Please do keep an eye on our Vacancies page for opportunities.
In addition to our core-funded positions and ad-hoc externally funded fellowships we have three additional fellowship schemes you may be able to take advantage of.
Displaced researcher scheme
We fund up to two positions at the LMS for scientists who have been displaced from their normal place of work by war. We currently host Oleh Lushchack, a Ukrainian scientist from Precarpathian University who was unable to work in Ukraine following the events of 2022.
Fellowships for researchers of Black heritage
Starting in 2025, we will be offering fellowships, each of a three year duration, for researchers with Black Heritage. Working in collaboration with the MRC’s Black in Biomedical Research programme, and its leader, Bernadine Idowu of the University of West London, these fellowships will be advertised each year.
Personal postdoctoral fellowships
We offer strong support to postdoctoral researchers at the LMS, or those interested in joining, to obtain personal fellowships to further their work and careers.
Roving researcher
The pressure of an academic career can make taking parental leave daunting. Our roving researcher scheme enables scientists to keep momentum while taking long-term leave from the lab.
