About me

About:

Wendy Bickmore is Director of the MRC Human Genetics Unit, at the University of Edinburgh. Wendy is fascinated by the three-dimensional organization of the human genome on chromosomes and in cells and how that influences genome function in health and disease. She discovered that human chromosomes are non-uniformly organized in the nucleus of our cells. Her current research explores how the non-coding genome regulates gene expression including how 3D chromosome organisation allows distant enhancers communicate with their target gene promoters. She was awarded a CBE for services to science and to women in science. She is also an EMBO member and a Fellow of the Royal Society, Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the Academy of Medical Sciences, in addition to an editor on many journals including PLoS Genetics and Cell and a Past President of the Genetics Society.
