Postdoctoral training
At the LMS, our postdoctoral researchers constitute the largest staff group who join us from across the world. We employ postdoctoral staff at various stages of their careers, from those who have recently graduated with PhDs to senior researchers on the cusp of independence.
Introduction to postdoctoral researcher life at the LMS
We are committed to supporting postdoctoral researchers at every stage of their careers. At LMS, postdoctoral researchers benefit from a dynamic and inclusive environment, complemented by state-of-the-art scientific facilities. Beyond the lab, postdoctoral researchers have access to a wide range of external training opportunities and are entitled to ten days of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) annually. Furthermore, our Postdoctoral Researcher Committee enhances their experience by organising a calendar of social events, including monthly social gatherings, board game nights, and an annual retreat.
What opportunities are available
At the LMS, postdoctoral staff include researchers funded by our MRC core funding, as well as those supported by a range of external funding sources. We also host postdoctoral staff with personal fellowships from prestigious programmes such as EMBO, Henry Wellcome, and FUNDAME, alongside clinical postdoctoral fellows funded through our Chain Florey scheme.
Postdoctoral positions are advertised on an ad-hoc basis throughout the year as vacancies arise. These roles may offer opportunities for hands-on research or lab management. We encourage you to regularly check our Vacancies page for opportunities.
Beyond our core-funded positions and externally funded fellowships, we also offer three additional fellowship schemes that may be of interest to prospective candidates.
Displaced researcher scheme
We support up to two positions at LMS for scientists displaced from their workplaces due to war. Currently, we are proud to host Oleh Lushchack, a Ukrainian scientist from Precarpathian University, who sought refuge from Ukraine in 2022. Through this initiative, Oleh has been able to continue his research in aging, nutrition and the microbiome at LMS.
Fellowships for researchers of Black heritage
Starting in 2025, we will launch three-year fellowships specifically for researchers of Black heritage. This initiative, known as the Emerging Innovators Fellowship has been developed in partnership with the MRC’s Black in Biomedical Research programme, led by Professor Bernadine Idowu, aims to foster diversity and inclusion in biomedical research. These fellowships will be advertised annually, providing opportunities for talented researchers to advance their careers and contribute to cutting-edge science.
Personal postdoctoral fellowships
We offer support to postdoctoral researchers at LMS, as well as to those interested in joining, to help them secure personal fellowships that will facilitate the advancement of their research and career progression.
Roving researcher
The demands of an academic career can make taking parental leave particularly challenging for scientists, as it often disrupts research progress. To address this, our Roving Researcher Scheme provides support by employing a dedicated researcher to continue the work of a scientist on extended leave, ensuring the continuity of their research.
