About the role
The Genomic Variation and Disease Group works at the intersection of medical genetics, bioinformatics, and molecular biology to explore the mechanisms underlying human diseases. The group uses CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing and synthetic genomics for mouse or human genome rewriting to model disease-causing chromosomal structural variants (SVs) and study their functional consequences. Our challenge is understanding how this type of genomic variation affects molecular and cellular processes to influence organismal phenotypes.
At our newly established lab, we are committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment where people of all backgrounds can thrive. We value diversity and collaboration and focus on conducting cutting-edge basic and translational science. We provide extensive on-the-job training as needed for the projects. At the LMS, we also offer excellent mentoring and support to help you reach your career goals. As a post holder, you will have the opportunity to work with an extensive network of collaborators, attend scientific conferences, and publish the results of your work in leading journals.
About You
We are looking for a talented postdoctoral scientist with a background in molecular biology to join our team. As a key member, you will be part of our collaborative effort to study the molecular mechanisms underlying gene regulation and develop a scalable platform for engineering patient-specific structural variants. Your work will involve in vitro (cellular differentiation) and/or in vivo mouse models, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing and high-throughput CRISPR screens, and single-cell technologies to investigate the molecular consequences of SVs impacting the noncoding genome.
What we offer
As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer defined benefit pension scheme and excellent holiday entitlement (30 days plus 2.5 privilege days & 8 bank holidays), family friendly policies (6 months full pay maternity & adoption leave), a range of shopping/travel discounts, access to our Employee Assistant Programme Scheme, Health and Wellbeing Support and a salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme. Athena SWAN
In 2017, the Institute received an Athena SWAN Silver Award to recognize its commitment to advancing women’s careers in science and research.
At the LMS there are three working groups which deliver on the action plan developed for the silver application.
Equality, diversity and wellbeing
The MRC LMS is committed to creating equality of opportunity to all members of the organisation, regardless of their background, and promoting diversity and inclusivity. We observe the Medical Research Council’s Equality and Diversity Vision, which sets out the MRC’s commitment to fulfill its obligations as a public body under the Equality Act 2010.
Technician’s Commitment
The LMS is a signatory to the Technician Commitment, a sector-wide initiative led by the Science Council and the Gatsby Foundation which aims to address the particular career challenges faced by technical and scientific support staff.
We provide opportunities to work alongside some of the top medical researchers on the planet, from our state-of-the-art research facilities.
