LMS creates new research division with opportunities for senior clinical scientists

Part of the new Division of Clinical Research are the Chain-Florey clinical fellows and lecturers

We’re delighted to announce the creation of the Division of Clinical Research within the Institute of Clinical Sciences. The new division, which complements our existing divisions Molecular Sciences and Imaging Sciences, is being launched alongside a new initiative to attract senior clinical academics to the department.

The new division, and the search for our new clinical colleagues, will be led by Dominic Withers, who has been appointed Director of Clinical Research. As Dominic moves to this role, we are also pleased to announce that Irene Miguel-Aliaga will take on Dominic’s responsibilities as section chair for Genes and Metabolism.

The LMS currently has a portfolio of clinical research opportunities, carefully nurtured over recent years and we are now ready to expand this to offer new posts at a more senior level.

Current opportunities include the Chain-Florey Clinical Research Fellowships, Chain-Florey Foundation Year 2 (FY2) Training and Chain-Florey Clinical Lectureships. The first offers clinicians the opportunity to carry out a PhD, the second is aimed at clinicians who have a PhD but are still near the start of their clinical training, and the third offers the opportunity to combine postdoctoral research and moving towards independence with completion of clinical training.

The new extension to this portfolio will establish a small cohort of more senior clinical groups, and will be launched over the next 12 months. “It’s important for the LMS that we continue to grow our opportunities for clinical researchers,” Carole Swan, Head of Operations at the LMS, explained. “We have decided to create a new cohort – Senior Clinical Lectureships – supported within Imperial College, and will be advertising to fill the first post of this new programme shortly.”
